It far surpasses any Paper Mario game to the max. The only big criticism is that there is too much backtracking. They've rehashed many of the characters and levels from the old game, but they all still work! The player starts off the story in a way fashionable to the first, with Luigi and Mario recieving a letter from Princess Peach, informing them that she has a treasure map, as shown in the game's introduction prior to the title screen. There are also smaller scale sprite animations of characters that appear in crowds not the audience, but for when several characters gather into a large group all at once, like the X-nauts at the beginning.
